Caitlin, a tough city girl and an orphan since age eight, faces two options when she gets in trouble with the law: Go to juvenile hall, or move to the wilds of Montana to live with distant cousins.

The first episode introduces us to Caitlin Seeger, a tough street-wise 14-year old from Philadelphia who is in trouble with the law. Caitlin's mother died when she was only 8 years old. She has been in and out of foster homes since her mother's death, but she has never again found the love that her mother once gave her. The streets of Philadelphia have been tough on Caitlin, but her rebellious personality and her love of photography have helped her to survive in her own unique way. Caitlin's world, however, is about to change forever. She soon finds herself in over her head after she gets in trouble with the law one too many times. She is expelled from the Catholic school she is attending. Caitlin is given the choice of either going to juvenile hall or of moving to High River, Montana to live with a cousin that she has never met nor even heard of. Caitlin goes to see Bandit the horse and ends up falling asleep in the barn. But after Caitlin uses Griffen's shirt as a rag, they get in trouble for fighting, and Dori makes them both make dinner. But then Bandit runs away. Caitlin get mad at Griffen for talking for her in class so she goes into the guys' bathroom to have it out with him, but they end up in trouble and have to clean the bathroom up. Although the teacher lets then leave early so they won't miss the bus, they do miss it and have to walk home. On the way home they spot Bandit and Caitlin calms the horse down and walks him home. Caitlin and Griffen finally are starting to get along.

In Science class, Caitlin and Griffen must do a science project where they drop an egg from 30 ft. without breaking it. Griffen's partner, the most popular girl in school, uses him and has griffen do the project by himself.
1x6 - Making Allowances
March 26, 2000
Caitlin's social worker arrives to examine Caitlin's progress and to decide whether or not to allow Caitlin to stay with the Lowes. Things start to go wrong shortly after the social worker arrives. Caitlin is seen near the cash register in a department store shortly before turns up missing. The money is later found in Caitlin's backpack. Caitlin says that she didn't take the money but nobody believes her. Jim is about to arrest Caitlin but Caitlin escapes on Griffen's new bike. Griffen later sees his bike outside of the school. He goes into the school and finds Caitlin developing pictures of Griffen performing stunts on his new bike. One of the pictures shows Ryan Zorn in the background putting the money into Caitlin's pack. The picture proves that Caitlin is innocent. Caitlin confronts Ryan later as he is being brought into the sheriff's office. She says, ""You set me up."" Ryan responds that he just wanted Caitlin to have the cash so that she could get a new camera case or a lens.
1x7 - Solar Mates

Caitlin's class goes on a camping trip, and Taylor and Caitlin are made partners in a tent. The teacher gets ill, and Dori and Jim are the chaperones. Caitlin and Taylor go to get firewood, and the girls forget their survival sheet. Taylor falls in the river, and Caitlin uses Griffin's guitar to rescue her.

Jim Lowe is up for re-election as Sheriff, with Griffen as his campaign manager. His plans are abruptly changed while a wiley circus bear runs loose, with a little assistance from Caitlin.

On a dare from Caitlin, Griffen steals a piece of movie memorabilia -- pulling off what seems to be an innocent prank. Consequently, Caitlin must face the repercussions of her dare. Meanwhile, Dori tries to cure an insomniac llama.

A disheartened, distraught Caitlin loses faith in herself and her creativity when her photography is criticized by a teacher. Simultaneously, Griffen gives up the High-Q team for the Grid-Iron glory.

It is the annual High River High School Spring Dance, and everyone is going, everyone except Caitlin. Dori tries to get her to come, until Caitlin explains why she is not going. She eventually comes to the dance, and dances with someone who is also at his first dance.

Caitlin out scores Griffen on an IQ test, threatening their new friendship. Griffen and friends start a garage band and audition for a talent show.
1x13 - Deputy for a Day
May 7, 2000
Caitlin spends the day with Jim on ""Take Your Daughter to Work Day,"" and through the experience, gains a new respect for the law. A ballet teacher substitutes as the coach for Griffen's gym class and attempts to teach the boys basketball.
1x14 - Along for the Ride

In a breakthrough bonding experience, Dori and Caitlin team up to compete in a mother-daughter horse rally. Conversely, Jim is challenged to settle an old high school score by one of Griffen's teachers.
1x15 - Puppy Love

Caitlin wants to get a dog, and Dori thinks she is not responsible enough. So Caitlin decides to prove to Dori she is responsible... by helping a dog give birth to 13 puppies. She does get all of them born, with help from Griffen, and Dori said that Caitlin would be her new assistant.
1x16 - Caitlin's Trust

Caitlin discovers that Jim and Dori are receiving money from the foster care system for her guardianship and strikes back by stealing their new car. A severe accident unveils the new, loving relationship she has developed with the Lowes. A frustrated and desperate Griffen tries everything to win a trip to Paris, home of his cyber pen pal.

Taylor is running for president, Griffen says he will write her speeches. Caitlin tells Griffen he should run, and she'll be his campain manager.

To help her friend Annie, Caitlin agrees to cover several waitressing shifts at the diner. But her bad attitude and poor performance ultimately jeopardizes Annie's job. In an attempt to show off their supreme bike racing skills, Griffen and his buddies challenge a team of cocky BMX all-stars to a race.
