Present, past and future of women's football
"Champions" (Campeonas) explores the past, present and future of women's soccer by looking at three generations united by passion across different European countries. In each episode, a pioneering player will talk about the past, a current star will showcase the current challenges and a future heroine will reflect on what's to come. With a road movie narrative, each episode will travel the world with the aim of uncovering the origins of women's soccer, the obstacles it has overcome, the challenges it still faces and what's left to do. The series will also focus on inclusion, the different game styles by country and, of course, meet and share testimonials of today's top European players.

1x1 - Champions: Spain

Carmen Arce, "Kubalita", goalkeeper of the first Spanish women's national team, leaves Valencia for Barcelona to meet Alexia Putellas, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup winner, and Viktoria Adrianova, both FC Barcelona players. Before the meeting, Alexia confesses that she is no longer as impatient as she used to be, Viky is moved by the memory of her injury and Kubalita claims that they did not hide, despite the fact that politicians and the media underestimated their activity. Once together, they exchange their impressions on how women's football is experienced nowadays.

Wendie Renard, seven-time UEFA champion and FIFA Women's Player of the Year in 2018, awaits the arrival of Annie Fortems, a pioneer of French women's football, and Sonia Ouchene, a promising young player from Stade de Reims, at the Olympique Lyonnais stadium. Wendie recalls the start of her career, her victories and the difficult moments, such as the racist attacks. Annie talks about how her generation made French women's football possible, despite receiving death threats, while Sonia speaks freely about the wage gap between women's and men's football. The meeting of the three will be full of mutual admiration.

Carolina Morace, in Rome, reveals herself as a woman of character, unafraid to be the first woman in anything, such as the first to score four goals at Wembley Stadium. Barbara Bonansea, Juventus player elected FIFA FIFPro Women's World 11 2020, is with her family, including her grandmother, who supported her in her desire to be a footballer. US Sassuolo youngster Benedetta Orsi talks optimistically about how she overcame the illness that forced her to give up tennis but gave her the opportunity to develop her passion for football.

The Flores family eats breakfast, lunch and dinner with football in mind. The young sisters Tatiana and Silvana train with their father, a former Mexican football player, and receive from him all the experience they need for their career. Kelly Smith, a true football legend, leading scorer in the history of the England national women's team, is waiting for them at home. Before the meeting with the Flores sisters, she shares with the programme's cameras the hardest moments of her career. Meanwhile, Lucy Bronze (Manchester City FC), FIFA Best Women's Player of the Year 2020, looks back on her career, with some surprising statements.

Bundesliga winner and AC Milan player Julia Simic travels from Nuremberg to pick up Dafina Redzepi (TSG Hoffenheim) and visit Bärbel Wohlleben, who has the honour of being the first woman whose goal was voted Goal of the Month by ARD Sportschau. Julia shows us the football camp she has set up so that girls can start playing, while Bärbel recalls her childhood years and how the German football federation (DFB) banned women from playing professional football. The three will play on the banks of the Rhine talking about their shared passion for the sport.

Three-time Olympic medallist and 2012 FIFA World Women's Coach of the Year Pia Sundhage tells us how she felt when she was first called up to the Swedish women's national team. She believes that football gave her a way of life. She tells Stina Blackstenius, FIFA Women's World Cup Bronze Medal and two Olympic Games Silver Medal winner, and Molly Johansson, both players for BK Häcken. Stina talks to them about the feelings she had when she took part in the Olympic Games, and how playing in France made her stronger, while Molly shows her goals for the future.
