Each year in America, 85% of inmates seeking early release will be denied, but 15% will be released from prison before serving their full sentences. Two thirds of these parolees will commit a crime that sends them back behind bars, making the decision to release an inmate early an agonizing dilemma. Judgment Day: Prison or Parole is an investigative series that takes viewers inside the high stakes decisions made by parole boards everyday. When 95% of inmates in the US will eventually be placed back into society, parole board members must decide who should remain incarcerated and who is safe for release.

Coming before the Colorado Board of Parole is Benny Sandoval, who has served 17 years of his 25-year sentence for 1st degree attempted murder, a crime he committed at the age of 16. North in Wyoming, Steve Barela, convicted of 2nd degree murder of his wife, hopes the board will give him a chance at parole.

James Sturman, convicted in the horrific murder of his girlfriend, hopes to be paroled to a halfway house in Casper, Wyoming. Across the state, Joshua Buckles hopes to put his violent crime in the past and become a family man. In Colorado, Jordan Epperson hopes to impress board member John O'Dell and be returned to his hometown in Arizona. Board members in each state must decide if these inmates are safe for release.
