The app developer Samuel has developed an algorithm to find his perfect partner. In a stolen data set, he comes across Lina, a waitress who is as chaotic as she is mysterious. Sam and Lina are at the center of the family comedy series Big Dating. App developer Samuel (Ole Fischer) no longer trusts his own feelings. Instead, he wants to find the perfect woman for him with the help of an algorithm he developed himself. His ideal partner is - surprisingly - Lina (Olga von Luckwald), a singing waitress with a penchant for spontaneous actions. Samuel throws himself head over heels into the new relationship. Supported by his two best friends Inga (Anna Schimrigk) and Henner (Leon Ullrich), who are about to become parents, Sam manages to win Lina over. But the mysterious algorithm has long since begun to change everyone's life.

Samuel, 31, is in search of the great love. The software developer from Hanover lives in a shared apartment. After a meeting in which Samuel presents his "App against hunger", his career takes a steep turn for the worse. His boss Peter moves him into the server room in the basement, where the company's mainframes evaluate illegally stored user data. This data set could contain the perfect match for me, thinks Samuel and starts writing an algorithm to track down the love of his life.

Ingas pregnancy test is positive. She is expecting a child. Samuel has applied his algorithm "just for fun" to the relationship of his two roommates. Result: They do not fit together. Inga is stunned. She is so happy with Henner. But the algorithm feeds her doubts: Is Henner, who hardly takes anything seriously, really the right person to start a family? Her mother constantly nagged him about it. At dinner, she makes it clear to Henner that she thinks he is a loser. Klaus visits his son at the company and, using an excuse, urges him to log into Gisela's cell phone so that he can read her text messages ("Your bull is hugging you!").

Samuel attends a yoga seminar in the country. In the camp, the first thing he has to do is switch off his cell phone, because it is "a soul eater". As he stows away the rest of his things, Lina suddenly emerges from the neighboring tent, in her wake: Carl, the sound designer in the creative crisis, with whom she has an open relationship. But Lina approaches Samuel and gets into a fierce argument with Carl. In Hanover Inga reveals to her horrified mother and her sister Bianca that she is pregnant. And she agrees to a deal: In order to prove that her boyfriend can handle children, Henner is supposed to look after Bianca's son Luis for one day.

To his surprise, he is not fired, but on the contrary promoted, because Peter senses the big business. Samuel is supposed to develop the partner exchange Big Dating. In the company Henner receives a call from Inga. Her nephew Luis has suffered a severe allergic shock and has to be hospitalized. The cause is a peanut bar, which was given to him by Henner. At the hospital bed Inga first tells him that she is pregnant. Afterwards she gives her boyfriend his marching orders.

In a few weeks Samuel is supposed to present the new dating app to investors. His boss has given him the task of putting together a powerful team. In passing, Samuel learns that his algorithm at Inga has run into a technical error. She is not at all his perfect match! What now? Lina quit her job as a waitress head over heels. She picks up Samuel by car and is stopped by the police. Lina has no driver's license. And Tapas, the dog in the back of the car, is not really hers. She is arrested. In the bicycle cellar Klaus and Gisela get closer again and rediscover their love.

The algorithm has found a new perfect partner for Samuel: Naomi, a nerdy software developer, not spontaneous, not wild, not adventurous, in other words just like himself. While they meet for their first date in the cool server room, Inga and Henner meet in a café. Inga has thought about co-parenting, a family foundation with raising children together without love, as the ideal life model for her. Henner has moved up the career ladder, as Samuel has appointed him as his project manager. With his career on the upswing, he proposed to Inga over coffee and cake.

Inga gets her things from the apartment and moves in with her mother. Klaus also packs his bags and stays with his son. Hanni organizes a birthday party for her daughter and announces that Inga and Philip are expecting a baby. Dressed as a waiter, Henner mingles with the guests, openly confronts Inga and almost goes to Philip's laundry. Samuel's meeting with the investor also ends in a debacle. He wants to filter out all women who are a little crazy from his dating app. Finally Inga starts to free herself from her mother and confesses to Henner. And with Samuel the doubts grow whether his app really helps people to become happy.

Samuel deletes all user data in the server room and destroys the hard drives. His algorithm is thus worthless. Lina wakes up completely disturbed in a swimming pool, next to her lies a box of tablets. She makes her way to the hotel where she had a happy night with Samuel and gains access to her old love room. How manic she begins to devastate the room. In front of Samuel's parents' house Gisela is about to say goodbye to Holger, when Klaus invites his rival to a dinner together. On his desperate search for Lina, Samuel finally tracks her down in the hotel, where she collapses in the bathroom. At the hospital, Lina reveals a secret to him. In his search for the great love, Samuel almost reaches his goal. But he still has a few months to go without Lina.
