Outgoing titleholder Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico crowned Sushmita Sen of India at the end of the event, marking the first time India has won Miss Universe.

This marks the first and so far only time the pageant has been held in Africa.

Miss Universe 2009, the 58th Miss Universe pageant, was held at the Imperial Ballroom, Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. It was the first back to back victories in Miss Universe history: Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela, was crowned Miss Universe 2009 by outgoing titleholder Dayana Mendoza. 84 countries and territories competed for the title and the pageant was broadcast live on NBC and Telemundo. On August 22, Jewel Selver representing Turks & Caicos withdrew from the pageant due to illness. Only 83 contestants competed in the final on August 23.

Miss Universe 2011, the 60th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant, that was held at the Credicard Hall, in São Paulo, Brazil last September 12, 2011. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crowned her successor Catriona Gray of the Philippines by the end of the event. The show was hosted by comedian Steve Harvey and supermodel Ashley Graham, while television personality Carson Kressley and runway coach Lu Sierra provided commentary and analysis throughout the event. American singer-songwriter Ne-Yo performed during the competition. Contestants from 94 countries and territories participated in this year's pageant, surpassing the previous record of 92 contestants in 2017. Ángela Ponce of Spain became the first openly transgender contestant to compete for the Miss Universe title.
