Sadly, Nastas is killed in the ambush, and John must fight through the remaining gang members to escort MacDougal safely back to Blackwater.

John Marston has arrived in Blackwater and meets up with Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham. Marston believes he has finished his job for the bureau, but finds out that they want him to take out Dutch van der Linde for them as well. The bureau will continue to "care" for Marston's wife and son until he does so. The agents have a possible location for Dutch. They believe he's held up with some other renegades in the Wreck of the Serendipity. During the cut scene, Marston obtains the High Power Pistol from Ross.
3x2 - Great Men are Not Always Wise

Word has it that Dutch van der Linde is coming into Blackwater to meet with the Banker. John heads to the bank joining Edgar Ross and his posse. The posse ends up on a roof across the courtyard from the bank and must snipe Dutch's gang before they get away. Once inside the bank, a small stand-off between Marston and Dutch ends with the death of a female bank worker named Muriel Scranton and Dutch's escape. The posse rides a short distance tailing Dutch, killing more of his gang along the way. Despite finding Dutch's automobile burning on the side of the road, he still manages to escape. Ross, of course, blames Marston.

John Marston is denied seeing his family once again by Agent Ross. He explains that they need to "take care of Dutch Van Der Linde now", and Marston has to help. With the help of the American Army, they attack his gang and move on to Dutch's hideout.
3x4 - And The Truth Will Set You Free

After the armored car is blown up, John Marston has to reach Dutch Van Der Linde's fort in Cochinay by horseback following Ross and the American Army. After the long ride up into the mountains, Marston and his allies prepare for an attack on Dutch and his gang.
3x5 - At Home with Dutch

John Marston is visiting Harold MacDougal when Nastas enters and says he knows where Dutch Van Der Linde and his gang are located, and that young men from the reservation are joining him and performing mischief, and that he and his gang are holed up in the hills in Cochinay. The three head out after the gang.

When John meets with the Professor Harold MacDougal, he finds MacDougal nervous and packing his bags for his return to Yale. MacDougal has had one too many brushes with death for his liking and decides he is not cut out to study "the savages". Their conversation is interrupted when Dutch Van Der Linde shoots out one of the windows and calls out to John. It's John's task to make sure the Professor gets out of town in one piece, as they get shot at by Native Americans that have the town surrounded. John then escorts MacDougal to Manzanita Post, where the professor catches his train back to Yale
