Serving on the punitive hunt for Pancho Villa, Patton enjoyed a brief moment of fame for gunning down some of Villa's lieutenants and returning to US camps with their bodies draped over the hood of his jeep. He would return as a ferocious, implacable military commander in World War II, as the first US General to battle against the Nazi forces. But Patton's belligerence, his profane and violent mood-swings that erupted on his own men, were nearly his undoing.
