He says that he was at the border outpost when the Persians attacked, the defenders died, but he managed to carry the commander, for which he received an officer rank. Stepan goes to get married.

D'Arnie warns his brother of the danger facing Okhotnikov. Peter passes this information to Lugin, and he tries to influence Alexander through Julia. Cherkasov does everything to prevent an assassination attempt on Okhotnikov, although he exposes himself to mortal danger.
