Hungary: Péter Esterházy, Péter Nadás

The works of leading writers Péter Nádas and Péter Esterházy share the theme of the central place history plays. "Great history and personal history cannot exist without each other” considers Péter Nádas (A Book of Memories, Parallel Stories). Péter Esterházy is a former footballer descended from a well established Magyar family, whose fantastical and overwhelming past he revisited in Harmonia cælestis. At the end of the 1970s, he embodied the new Hungarian literature. His sharp eye scans a wide range, from seriousness to mischief. Péter Nádas displays intense sensitivity, which translates into his books as unruly narration, haunted by the idea of chaos.
